Our Itinerary
1-Day Trip
Zhenguo Temple, Pingyao
Zhenguo Temple is a millennium-old UNESCO World Heritage monastery. With the ancient city and Shuanglin Temple, it forms the "One City, Two Temples" ensemble. Founded in 963 AD , it is best known for the Wanfo (Ten Thousand Buddhas) Hall , one of China’s oldest wooden structures. Built without iron nails , with dougong brackets and mortise-and-tenon joinery, the hall’s dramatic bracket sets and gracefully sweeping eaves capture rare Tang-style grandeur.
Inside, 11 original painted clay statues from the Five Dynasties period form a rare and exquisite collection outside Dunhuang, with rounded forms that echo Tang artistic traditions. Other highlights include the Yuan-era Heavenly King Hall and the Ming-era Three Buddhas Tower, whose 52 finely painted narrative murals depict Sakyamuni Buddha's life .
Zhenguo Temple is a serene space for reflection. In its enduring architecture and sacred art, the depth and richness of classical Chinese Buddhist heritage is beautifully preserved.
Ancient City of Pingyao
The Ancient City of Pingyao is a town from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a history of 2,800 years . It is recognized as an "outstanding example of Han Chinese cities during the Ming and Qing dynasties" and is the centerpiece of the "One City, Two Temples" UNESCO World Heritage Site —a living open-air museum .
The city's layout famously resembles a "tortoise" , with ancient city walls that bear witness to its storied past. Inside the walls, streets and narrow alleyways preserve the complete legacy of Shanxi's merchant finance.
The Rishengchang Exchange Shop —a forerunner of modern banking—and the underground vault of the Xietongqing Exchange Shop reveal the immense wealth of Jin merchants. The Ancient County Government Office showcases the authority of a traditional Chinese yamen, while the wooden Confucius Temple and the painted sculptures of the Town God’s Temple embody the city’s cultural spirit—best enjoyed by staying in a traditional guesthouse within the ancient walls and strolling the bluestone-paved lanes on foot.
Shuanglin Temple, Pingyao
With over 1,400 years of history, Shuanglin Temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Pingyao Ancient City and its Two Temples," renowned for its exceptional painted clay sculptures . The fortified courtyard complex houses over 2,000 sculptures from the Song to Qing dynasties—a treasure trove of Oriental sculptural art .
The Weituo statue in the Thousand-Buddha Hall is considered the finest of its kind in China , with its dynamic, S-shaped posture. The Thousand-Armed Guanyin in the Bodhisattva Hall displays remarkable grace, while the Eighteen Arhats each express unique character.
Beyond its sculptures, the temple grounds preserve ancient steles, bells, and a pagoda tree. Its rich cultural heritage has inspired modern media, notably the game Black Myth: Wukong . More than a place of worship, Shuanglin Temple is a living museum of classical Chinese art, offering insight into the nation's artistic and spiritual traditions.
