The Underground Route
Guizhou’s Wildest Cave Expedition

Why Guizhou?

Guizhou sits on one of Earth’s largest karst plateaus. Over millions of years, water has carved the limestone into underground rivers, sinkholes, and towering peak forests found nowhere else at this scale. The province holds over 4,000 known caves — many unexplored — along with China’s deepest tiankeng (giant sinkholes) and longest subterranean river systems. A geological wonderland hidden beneath green.

Beyond the stone, Guizhou is one of China’s most ethnically diverse provinces. Miao, Dong, Buyi and over a dozen groups have shaped this highland for centuries, building stilted wooden villages into mountainsides, perfecting silver-work and indigo dyeing, and preserving oral traditions through song and festival. Natural spectacle and living culture overlap here — untouched by mass tourism.

Our Itinerary

4-Day Trip

Day 1: Paddling the Underground River

An hour from Guiyang, Shilong Cave is among Guizhou’s iconic karst water caves — formed 2 million years ago. Named after a 10-meter “stone dragon” on the ceiling, it went viral on social media with over 30 million views — an adventure benchmark.

The highlight: SUP paddleboard cave exploration. In wetsuits and life jackets, visitors glide through clear pools — navigating narrow passages, ducking beneath low ceilings. The 3–5 hour journey leads to a cavern of sapphire-hued pools, Guizhou’s most photogenic underground scene.

The cave maintains a spring-like temperature year-round. Stalactites, stone curtains, pillars rise like sculptures, while travertine dams and calcification pools create an otherworldly landscape. Headlamps reveal extraordinary formations—evoking Pandora from Avatar.

Once a hidden secret, Shilong Cave has quickly become Guizhou’s hottest adventure destination. Gliding through luminous pools or squeezing beneath ancient rock, every stroke a conversation with the earth—an unforgettable encounter with Guizhou’s underground soul.

Day 2–3: Into Earth’s Core & Above the Clouds

In Libo County, Cool Park spans 6,000 acres of primeval woodland in the Sancengdong Nature Reserve. Hundreds of karst caves hide beneath dense canopy of rare flora — a wild frontier where Guizhou’s geology meets adrenaline.

The signature: Earth’s Core Adventure. Zip-line into an underground cave, exploring stalactites, fossil walls, lotus ponds, and subterranean rivers by headlamp — then a 21-meter vertical bungee and glass boats through an underground river into the planet’s hidden heart.

Day 4: The Lost Cave of Ziyun

Ziyun Dajiao Cave Exploration: A Real-Life Journey to the Center of the Earth

Ziyun Dajiao Cave Exploration: A Real-Life Journey to the Center of the Earth

The Dajiao Cave lies in the Miao Yalu King cultural zone — cliff burials and cave dwellings carved into limestone. The cavern brims with stalactites, stalagmites, stone columns, and flowstone pools — a gallery ten of thousands of years old.

Downstream of “Miao Hall” Cave, only one entrance exists — its exit undiscovered. The expedition covers 6–7 km: 1 hour hiking, up to 7 hours underground. A boat reaches the entrance; explorers gear up with helmets and SRT systems.

The showstopper: a 60–70 meter SRT rope descent into the abyss — a white-knuckle rappel where the bottom vanishes into blackness. Deeper inside, headlamps reveal ancient formations, while mineral deposits shaped by flowing water sparkle like subterranean constellations — hauntingly beautiful.

All professional caving equipment is provided (excluding personal clothing and footwear). Participants should evaluate their fitness beforehand — this is a genuine expedition, not a leisurely stroll.
