Our Itinerary
5-Day Trip
Begin with a breathtaking ride on one of the world’s longest alpine cable carsโa 7.5-kilometer journey ascending 1,279 meters from the city to the misty summit of Tianmen Mountain. At the top, walk the thrilling cliff-hanging glass walkways, where transparent panels beneath your feet reveal sheer drops into the abyss, creating a surreal “walking on clouds” sensation.
The highlight is the iconic Tianmen Caveโa majestic natural arch piercing through the cliff at 1,300 meters, standing 131.5 meters tall. Revered as “Heaven’s Gate,” it’s reached by climbing the legendary 999-step Sky Ladder, a journey that builds anticipation with every step. Don’t miss the mystical “Heaven’s Gate Exhaling Clouds” phenomenon when mist swirls through the archway.

Explore China’s first national forest park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its otherworldly quartzite sandstone pillarsโthe inspiration behind the floating Hallelujah Mountains in James Cameron’s Avatar. Over 3,000 rock formations rise more than 200 meters high, shrouded in mist and draped in lush vegetation.
Start at Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, home to the renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain,” the natural span of First Bridge Under Heaven, and sweeping views from Mihun Terrace. Ride the record-breaking Bailong Elevatorโthe world’s tallest outdoor liftโascending 326 meters in just 88 seconds. Continue to Tianzi Mountain, the “Monarch of the Peak Forest,” where ethereal seas of clouds surround iconic formations like the Imperial Brush Peaks.

Conclude your trip at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, a natural oxygen bar of lush forests and cascading waterfalls. The star attraction is the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridgeโone of China’s highest and longest glass-bottom bridges, stretching transparently over a 400-meter drop with stunning views straight down to the canyon floor. Thrill-seekers can try the bungee jumping platform at its center.
Beyond the bridge, explore scenic spots including Shenquan Gorge and the Ladder Plank Walkway, leading to Yixiantianโa dramatic narrow gorge flanked by towering cliffs. Finish the adventure with a fun slide descent and a relaxing boat cruise through the canyon’s pristine natural beautyโa perfect blend of adrenaline and serenity to close your Zhangjiajie journey.

Spend a leisurely morning exploring Furong Ancient Town at your own pace. Wander narrow cobblestone alleys lined with Qing Dynasty architecture, sample the famous Furong rice tofu, and enjoy Tujia cultural performances. Less commercialized than most ancient towns, Furong preserves authentic charmโlocals still live traditionally among cascading stilt houses above the Youshui River.
The town gained fame from the 1986 film Hibiscus Town. Its evening illuminations transform the waterfall and buildings into a magical scene. In the afternoon, drive about 1.5 hours to Fenghuang Ancient Townโone of China’s most beautiful small towns. Here, the emerald Tuo River winds through traditional stilted houses, weathered flagstone streets, and iconic bridges. Settle in and enjoy the enchanting riverside nightscape.

Enjoy a free morning soaking in the timeless beauty of Fenghuang Ancient Town. Take a boat ride on the Tuo River, gliding past ancient riverside architecture and local life. Stroll along Dongzheng Street or Dengying Street to experience the town’s literary heritageโthis setting inspired Shen Congwen’s celebrated novel Border Town.
For panoramic views, climb Nanhua Mountain or ascend the Rainbow Bridge (Fengyu Tower)โthe vistas are especially stunning in morning light. Explore the rich Miao and Tujia cultures through local crafts, silver jewelry, and traditional snacks along the alleys. In the afternoon, depart for the scenic 3-hour drive back to Zhangjiajie, bringing your Western Hunan adventure to a memorable close.
